In the foreground a person wearing a brown coat and a dark hat walks beside a light brown horse with a pale muzzle, the horse carrying saddlebags. Nearby a white horse with a dark bridle stands next to a seated figure in a grayish coat with a fur collar and a cap, who has a mustache and beard. Behind them another seated figure in bluish clothing and a cap looks on. To the left a group of figures in muted gray and blue uniforms with ochre packs march away along a path. In the midground under the trees a glowing area suggests a small fire with standing and seated figures in soft pastel tones. The palette includes blues, grays, browns, ochre, green, and touches of reddish and pinkish hues.
