The Seine in Les Andelys, Pankiewicz, Józef 1866–1940, painter; Young Poland style. One of many views of the Seine and its picturesque corners, so eagerly painted by the Impressionists. 1920, oil painting, 54 × 65 cm., A riverside scene showing a calm body of water with a group of small boats moored near the near bank, the boats painted with noticeable red or orange undersides and darker interiors. The near shoreline has areas of green grass and brown earth with a sloping embankment leading down to the water, and a few indistinct objects resting on the bank. On the far bank and in the middle distance there are clusters of trees and tall leafy vegetation in shades of green, with some trees showing darker green and touches of yellow and brown. Beyond the trees, low rolling hills appear in muted purples and blues under a pale sky with soft washes of white, light blue, and hints of pink. The water reflects the sky and surrounding colors in soft blues, greens, and touches of purple, with gentle rippling brushstrokes visible throughout the composition.
