Head of St. Thomas the Apostle. The head of an old man with sparse grey hair above a vaulted forehead is turned slightly to the left. Irregularly placed eyes with a tired expression stare into the indefinite distance; disheveled sideburns surround the face, and deep furrows on the forehead. The background on the left side of the head is light, on the right dark. The painting is executed with thick, quick brushstrokes. On the lower left, a builder's square partially cut off by the edge — an attribute of St. Thomas. 18th/19th century painting, height 27.5 cm, width 21.5 cm., A painted close-up of an elderly man's face framed by a carved wooden border, showing a wrinkled forehead, bushy white eyebrows, tired eyes, a large nose, and a long white beard and mustache with flowing, textured brushstrokes; the palette includes browns, ochres, beige, cream, muted reds, and dark shadows in black and deep brown, with subtle highlights of pale yellow and gray in the hair and beard.
