Apollo and the Muses, Paolo de Matteis 1662–1728, oil painting, 17th–18th century; mythological scene depicting Apollo and the Muses with musical instruments; height 80.9 cm, width 57.3 cm., A painted scene of a group of classical figures seated on and surrounded by clouds, with a central elevated figure holding a stringed instrument and wearing a flowing garment, and several smaller winged cherub-like figures nearby; the figures wear draped robes and some hold musical instruments, wreaths, or other small objects. The composition is enclosed by an ornate curved frame with decorative scrollwork and sculptural accents, and additional partially visible figures in reclining poses appear at the edges. The color palette includes muted warm browns, golds, and ochres in the background and frame, soft creams and tans in the clouds and garments, and touches of blue, pale green, and dusty pink in some clothing and accents, with darker deep brown and black tones in shaded areas.
