Atalanta and Hippomenes, Willem van Herp 1613/1614–1677, mythological scene depicting Atalanta and Hippomenes with apples, dogs, and landscape; Flemish painting, 17th century; oil on panel or painting — height 115 cm, width 169 cm; with frame: height 126 cm, width 178.5 cm., A painted outdoor scene shows a group of people on a grassy landscape under a cloudy sky, with a few tall green trees framing the sides. In the foreground a woman in a flowing pink dress and pale skin leans forward, holding a golden round object above the ground while another golden round object lies near her bare feet; her blonde hair is partly covered by a pale veil. A young man in a dark purple tunic with yellow-orange ribbons and sandals is stepping away with an outstretched arm and a startled expression, reaching toward something in his hand. To the left a small group of women and a child in dark blue and black clothing watch the scene, their faces turned toward the central figures. Behind them stands a group of men in varied muted colors, some holding long pale banners or spears. In the distant middle ground small figures move on the rolling green hills. On the right foreground a small white and brown dog runs near some rocks and green grasses. The overall palette includes greens, blues, purples, pinks, yellows, browns, white, and grey.
