Bacchanalia, Bertin, Nicolas 1668-1736 painter, French painting; subject: Bacchus myth., bacchanalia, caves, mythological scenes; attributes: chalices, jugs, chalice; possible association: Ghigiotti, Gaetano 1728-1796; date: ca. 1710–1720; place of origin: Paris., A painted scene shows a group of figures in a cave-like setting with a dark brown and black upper background and a lighter brown and green area toward the left where a glimpse of sky appears. A male figure with brown skin and dark hair faces away from the viewer, wearing a flowing red cloth and holding a cup aloft. A group of three partially clothed figures recline on a rock illuminated by warm light; their skin tones are pale to pink, and they wear green wreaths and small draped fabrics in shades of yellow and green. One central figure is more rotund and sits forward on the rock, while the other two lean toward him. A fallen vessel in brown lies on the ground near the rock. The overall palette includes browns, dark greens, reds, yellows, pinks, and touches of pale blue in the distant sky.
