Flowers and Small Creatures - Vanitas, Mignon, Abraham 1640-1679, painter; still life painting, 2nd half of the 17th century. Depicts flowers, fruit, birds, snakes, frogs, butterflies, beetles, mice, ears of grain; Vanitas iconography. Purchase provenance., A detailed still life scene fills the image with a large, dense bouquet of flowers and foliage set against a dark background; the flowers include roses and peonies in shades of pink, red, white, and coral, lilies in white, irises in pale blue, morning glories in bright blue, and small yellow blossoms, all surrounded by green leaves of various tones. Scattered among the plants are several pieces of fruit in orange and green hues, a few grasses and wheat stalks in pale yellow, and thistles with muted brown and green tones. A couple of butterflies and small insects with orange, brown, and black markings rest on and fly near the blossoms, while a few birds with brown, black, and white feathers appear perched and in flight near the top of the composition. At the lower area, a woven basket in brown sits beside stones in gray, a pale birch branch, scattered shells and pebbles, and a small frog in green near shallow water. The overall palette combines deep dark browns and blacks in the background with vibrant greens, pinks, reds, whites, blues, oranges, and muted yellows in the foreground elements.
