Jug, Westerwald ceramics center; ca. 1400–, stoneware jug with spherical body, high cylindrical neck and small triangular spout, wide almost cylindrical foot profiled with transverse rims and widened by a roller at the base. Prominent U-shaped applied handle. Glazed grey and cobalt blue with manganese accents. Relief decoration: three oval medallions within a wreath of radially arranged stylized lilies on the body. Central medallion: coat of arms with a crowned griffin; side medallions: busts of Louis XIV. Medallions are surrounded by a ribbon inscribed LUDOVICUS XIII.FRANCIAE.ET.N.REX.CHR.1679 and a laurel wreath. Below the medallions a symmetrical floral composition; French lilies and the letters PR appear at center on both sides. Belly background is sapphire except for a wide vertical stripe at the back, Louis's hair, the background of the ribbons and plant frames of the medallions, and the centers of the lilies, which are cherry-brown. Late 17th–18th century, Germany. Vessel. Height 27.5 cm; width 17.5 cm; depth 15.5 cm., A ceramic jug with a rounded body, narrow neck, and curved handle, shown against a plain gray background. The jug has a deep blue glaze covering most of the body and neck, with areas of white or off-white around the rim, handle, and base. The rounded face of the jug features a circular raised medallion and a ring of raised floral or petal-like decorations in off-white with blue accents. The handle is off-white with some blue glazing near its attachment points. The base has alternating bands of blue and off-white. Overall visible colors include deep blue, off-white, beige, and hints of brown on the medallion and some worn areas.
