Tobacco jar with brass lid. Ovoid faience vase with a low, slightly parted neck, painted in cobalt on white. Genre scene depicting an Indian smoking a pipe under a tobacco bush and a vase labeled No. 17, arranged against a schematic seascape with two sailing ships. An Indian sits on a pedestal on which stands the labeled ovoid vase with lid; on the opposite side of the pedestal is a basket with a pineapple and a container. Similar vessels serving as tobacco jars were produced in the Netherlands throughout the 18th century. Inscriptions on the vase on the pedestal likely refer to the origin or type of tobacco. 18th century, Netherlands, Delft. Vessel: height 25 cm, width 21.5 cm; lid: height 7.6 cm, width 12.8 cm., A rounded ceramic jar with a domed metal lid topped by a small spherical finial sits against a plain gray background, the jar showing a white base color with blue painted decorative motifs including stylized leaves and a scene with architectural and plant forms, and the metal lid appearing brass-colored with a slightly aged patina.
