Tobacco jar with brass lid. Faience, De Vergulde Blompot factory; 1616–1841 and Delft ceramics centre; ca. 1600– . Ovoid vase with a low, slightly parted neck, white ground painted in cobalt with a genre scene: an Indian smoking a pipe under a tobacco bush and a vase inscribed No. 17. Scene set against a schematic seascape with two sailing ships. An Indian sits on a pedestal on which stands an ovoid vase with a lid; opposite the pedestal on the ground sits a basket with a pineapple and a container for liquid. Similar tobacco jars were produced in the Netherlands throughout the 18th century. The inscriptions on the vase on the pedestal likely referred to the origin or type of tobacco. 18th century, Netherlands, Delft. Vessel; height 25 cm, width 21.5 cm; lid height 7.6 cm, lid width 12.8 cm., A rounded ceramic jar with a bulbous shape and a slightly tapered base, finished in a pale off-white glaze with subtle bluish hints and small speckles, topped by a metallic lid with a warm brass color and a rounded knob; the background and surface beneath the jar are shades of gray.
