Pharmacy jug, Montelupo ceramics center; ca. 1400–, role classification of maker, pottery inscriptions — dragons, monograms, cartouches, plant decorations, jugs. A two-handled, ovoid pharmacy vase with a cylindrical neck, gently flaring at the rim. On the belly is a tubular spout, and on the sides are two handles in the form of fanciful dolphins dragons?. On the front is an oval cartouche with the inscription LIBERTAS framed by a massive laurel garland. The remaining background is grey and white, painted in two tones of cobalt, with a densely coiled twig with tripartite leaves and flowers a foglie. The decoration is dominated by cobalt blue in varying degrees of saturation, yellow, and green with accents of ochre and purple. Around the neck is a wavy twirl with birds. Below the handles is the letter B. The vase is an interesting example of Montelupo production, specializing in pharmacy vessels with leaf decoration inspired by Venetian ornamentation. Circa 1575, Italy, Montelupo, vessel, height 36 cm, width 29 cm., A painted ceramic jug with a rounded body, a short neck, and a short central spout, showing a pair of curved handles shaped like stylized sea creatures. The surface is decorated with ornate painted motifs in blue, green, yellow, and white, with accents of dark blue and touches of brown. A decorative cartouche in yellow and dark blue appears on the front, surrounded by leafy green wreath-like designs and stylized floral elements in blue and yellow. The handles are primarily yellow and green with scale-like texture, and the neck has blue ornamental banding. The background against which the jug is photographed is a uniform gray.
