Kontusz belt, 18th century, Poland. Woolen fabric with geometric and floral ornaments: elongated motifs resembling boats or leeches in black and red-sapphire thread arranged in alternating rows on a yellow background. One belt head narrower 46 cm with more tightly arranged decorations; remaining sections wider 48–51 cm with more loosely arranged decorations. Short fringes of warp threads. Function: national costume, men's clothing accessory. Length 261 cm; width 50 cm., Two long rectangular woven fabrics lie side by side on a light background, both predominantly yellow. The left fabric shows a dense repeating small oval motif in darker colors creating a textured pattern across the surface, with a fringed edge at the bottom; colors visible include yellow, dark blue or black, and hints of red. The right fabric has horizontal rows of loose, looped threads and tufted areas, giving a more irregular textured appearance, with loose yarns and stray fibers visible; colors visible include yellow, red, blue, and darker thread accents, and a fringed bottom edge.
