Kontusz belt, Polish clothing accessory. 2nd half of the 18th century, Lyon, France. Four-sided, bipartite heads with a floral bouquet pattern; continuous pattern of flower branches with tendrils of large flowers. Sewn-on gold fringe. Materials/colors: gold, light green, pink, navy blue, cherry red, black. Length 174 cm, width 36 cm., A worn rectangular textile fragment with a floral pattern, showing an ornate central panel flanked by decorative borders; the fabric background is a beige or light gold tone with visible areas of fraying and thread loss. The design includes stylized flowers and foliage in shades of red, pink, green, dark blue, and muted brown, with gold or yellow metallic threads woven throughout; some floral motifs feature a prominent starburst-like bloom in red and dark blue, and other blossoms in green and pink. The borders contain repeating floral sprigs in similar colors, and the lower edge has a short fringe in a yellowish-gold color. There are patches where threads are missing and areas of loose, tufted, or tangled orange-yellow and gold fibers, creating irregular textured zones against the flatter woven sections. The overall appearance is aged and distressed, with a mix of intact patterned areas and heavily deteriorated sections.
