Kontusz sash, Royal Silk Manufactory in Grodno; silk fabric and belt manufacture; 1768–1780. Semi-solid kontusz sash, single-sided. Single-piece heads with a floral pattern and alternating transverse stripes—some smooth, some with a floral tendril pattern. Floral tendril edging. Sewn-on golden fringe. Colors: gold, green, pink, cream, blue. Ornament - Heads: projections of flower or fruit branches; four on each side in antithetical arrangement, two in the middle arranged asymmetrically. - Center: transverse shelves alternating plain and with a floral tendril motif. - Borders: vertical and horizontal with a floral tendril motif; borders with interlacing lines or a snake. Colors - Background of heads, edges and shelves with tendril: gold; ornament: green, pink and blue; plain shelves: cream. Weave density: in heads, edges and shelves with tendril approx. 16/32 x2; in smooth shelves approx. 46/32. Place of origin: Grodno Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Poland. Maker: Royal Silk Manufactory in Grodno., Two long narrow woven panels hang vertically side by side against a pale background; the left panel is a light golden beige with horizontal bands of delicate floral embroidery in muted colors and a decorative border, ending in a fringe of metallic gold threads, while the right panel is a greenish-gold with horizontal textured stripes and faint floral motifs in greens and subtle pinks, also finished with a gold fringe.
