Kontusz belt, Giani I. 19th century. Four-sided kontusz belt with heads composed of two branches bearing bota palmettes in mirror symmetry. Centre: transverse shelves alternating with a tendril with bota motifs and a zigzag ribbon. Edges: tendril motifs like the shelves. Borders: arranged in squares. Colouring: Right side — straw-colored background; ornament of heads, borders, and shelves with tendrils in navy blue and shades of blue and pink; shelves with zigzags half lilac. Left side — colouring of heads, borders, and shelves with tendrils reversed from the right side; shelves with zigzags have a background half straw-colored and half celadon-colored; ornament is lilac. Technique: flaunted and brocaded weave. Weave density: approx. 26 weft threads and 22 warp threads per cm². Function: men's kontusz belt clothing accessory. Date/place of origin: 19th century, Vienna. Dimensions: length 325 cm, width 37.5 cm., A rectangular textile panel with a decorative border and central repeating motif, predominantly yellow and deep blue with accents of pink, green, and beige; the border features a narrow patterned frame in deep blue on yellow with small rounded floral-like shapes in pink and beige, and an upper band with a triangular green and pink design; the central field shows a symmetrical arrangement of stylized paisley and floral forms in deep blue filled with pink and beige rounded elements, with curling stems and leaf shapes in deep blue and touches of green; the lower edge has a fringe in brownish-gold.
