Fan, Double-sided fan with an ivory frame and painted paper covering. The obverse most likely depicts a marriage proposal: around a young lady seated in a park setting, dressed in a French-style dress, stand a boy playing a flute, a shepherd holding a lamb, a gardener, and a gardener with a basket of fruit; the lady is assisted by a girl sitting on a stone. On the left, a young man with a bouquet of flowers and a dog; on the right, a girl with an open birdcage on her lap and a boy holding a small bird. Cupid, holding a garland of flowers, hovers above the figures. The scene is surrounded by an ornament of colorful flowers and gold Rococo motifs. On the reverse, edged with a delicate blue Rococo ornament, a shepherdess wanders alone in a park landscape. In places where the leaf's cover is torn, elements cut from colored graphics are glued in: on the right side two caricatured male profiles; near the upper edge a girl's silhouette in a landscape, bearded men holding a ribbon with a Chinese inscription, and a girl with a flowing shawl. Rococo style, 2nd half of the 18th century, France. Clothing accessory; height 28 cm., An open handheld fan with a painted leaf showing a pastoral scene featuring a lone figure in a dress standing on a grassy area amid trees and distant hills, painted in soft blues, greens, browns, and muted pinks; decorative floral motifs and scrolling ornaments appear along the edges in shades of blue, pink, and green with touches of gold trim; the fan sticks and guards are carved and perforated in an ivory or cream color with delicate pierced patterns and small ornamental details, and there are small areas of red and yellow accents near the base and along the painted border.
