Fan, fans, fashion accessories, genre scenes, Rococo style, restitution noted. Double-sided fan with an ivory frame and painted paper covering. The obverse most likely depicts a marriage proposal, indicated by figures and symbolic props: a young lady seated in a park wearing a French-style dress, attended by a girl on a stone; a boy playing a flute; a shepherd holding a lamb; a gardener and a gardener with a basket of fruit; a young man with a bouquet and a dog on the left; a girl with an open birdcage on her lap and a boy holding a small bird on the right. Cupid, holding a garland of flowers, hovers above the group. The scene is surrounded by ornamentation of colorful flowers and gilt Rococo motifs. The reverse shows a shepherdess wandering alone in a park landscape, the edge decorated with a delicate blue Rococo ornament. In areas where the paper leaf is torn, elements cut from colored prints have been glued in: on the right side two caricatured male profiles; near the upper edge a girl's silhouette in a landscape; bearded men holding a ribbon with a Chinese inscription; and a girl with a flowing shawl. 2nd half of the 18th century, France; clothing accessory; height 28 cm., A decorative folding fan with a painted leaf showing a pastoral scene in soft colors including blue, green, pink, purple, brown, gold, white, and cream; the painted area depicts a group of figures in period dress on a landscape with trees, grassy hills, and architectural ruins, with a few seated and standing figures, one holding a small object and another accompanied by a small dog, and several figures clustered near the center; the edges of the painted leaf are bordered with gilded ornament and floral decorations in red, pink, white, and green; the fan sticks and guards are carved and pierced in an ivory or cream tone with gilt accents and darker inlaid details, and there are floral and scrolling decorative motifs along the lower edges.
