Lace fragment - shuttlecock, mid-19th century, France. Lace shuttlecock used as a clothing accessory/fashion item. Lower edge: semicircular serrations bordered with fine serrations with geometric ornament. From the semicircular serrations upwards: a floral ornament repeating with a twig motif in triangular divisions; above this, a small twig in a regular projection. Materials: lace. Dimensions: width 42 cm, length 430 cm., A length of delicate off-white lace fabric with a scalloped bottom edge and an irregular top edge, laid flat against a gray background; the lace has a repeating floral and leafy embroidered pattern that becomes denser toward the scalloped edge, with a sheer net-like ground showing a few small holes and some tiny darker spots; the visible colors are off-white for the lace and shades of gray for the background and the sheer areas.
