Lace fragment - shuttlecock, mid-19th century, France; lace; clothing accessory shuttlecock; lower edge with semicircular serrations bordered by fine serrations with geometric ornament; above semicircles a repeating floral ornament with a twig motif in triangular divisions; above this a small twig in a regular projection; width 42 cm, length 430 cm., A length of delicate lace fabric laid flat against a solid background, showing a scalloped lower edge with intricate floral embroidery and repeating ornate motifs above; the lace is predominantly off-white or cream with small embroidered leaf-like patterns across the body and denser floral designs along the scalloped border, and there are a few irregular holes and tears near the top edge as well as some small brownish stains scattered in several spots; the background behind the lace is a uniform cool gray.
