Composition surrounded by a margin of leaves and flowers; decorated in light pastel colors and gilded ornament. On the reverse, children playing in a meadow among trees and flowers. Feathers cut from ivory, openwork, painted with oil and inlaid with gilded tin foil. Central cartouche with a figural representation against palace and garden architecture. 2nd half of the 18th century, France. Height 40.4 cm., A decorative folding fan displayed open against a dark background shows a painted scene across the leaf with a group of figures in period clothing and classical architectural and landscape elements, framed by floral ornamental borders; colors visible include blue, pink, yellow, gold, green, red, brown, cream, and black. The fan sticks and guards feature intricate openwork carving with gilded accents and painted details in gold and muted colors, and the outer edges of the leaf have stylized floral motifs in pastel blues, pinks, and greens. The painted central scene contains figures wearing garments in shades of blue, pink, yellow, cream, and red, standing near columns and a chariot, while the surrounding landscape includes green foliage, brown earth tones, and a pale sky. The lower area of the fan shows the carved frame in an ivory or cream tone with small colored highlights and gold decoration.
