Tapestry - embroidered picture, Malachowska, Benigna 1795-1873 author, tapestries, embroideries, November Uprising 1830-1831, fabrics. The embroidery depicts a scene at Castle Square in Warsaw: repressions against the population after the November Uprising. The embroidery depicts the kidnapping of Polish children by Muscovites from their mothers to be taken to schools deep in Russia. These events took place in Warsaw in 1832, after the collapse of the November Uprising. Cardboard on board after a drawing by Marcin Tworowski fl. ca. 1831–ca. 1835 or a lithograph based on the same drawing by Nicolas Eustache Maurian 1799–1850, was probably made by General Kazimierz Malachowski, and the picture was embroidered by his wife Benigna. In the new catalogue inventory the picture is noted as embroidered by jean. K. Malachowska. Graphic after a drawing by Marcin Twarowski, a Polish officer. Lithograph Maurin. Fabrics, height 31.5 cm, width 43 cm., A woven scene showing a busy outdoor gathering in front of large classical buildings, with a tall column topped by a statue near the center and a clock tower visible to the right; a crowd of men and women in period clothing fills the foreground, some wearing hats and uniforms, others in dresses, with a few seated and many standing and gesturing; a carriage wheel and part of a vehicle appear among the people toward the right, and a dog stands near the lower left; colors visible include beige and tan for the buildings and ground, muted blues and grays in the sky and clothing, red accents in roofs and garments, and touches of black and white in hats and details.
