Cabriolet fan. A fan with a frame of carved and foil-inlaid ivory. The leaf is decorated with an amateur drawing depicting a country estate with documentary precision. The cover feathers are decorated with fine Rococo ornamentation, inlaid with silver and colored foil. In the center of the drawing, a couple strolls along a garden path leading to the palace; in the background are farm buildings, a stable, a coach house, and horse-drawn vehicles, as well as several figures engaged in farm chores and a group of soldiers. In the garden: military tents, a henhouse, a swing, a sundial, and a card table. Architecture and clothing of figures from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, 1780s. Place of origin: Germany? Height: 28 cm., A folding hand fan with pale beige leaf showing a painted outdoor scene in muted colors, including a pale red-roofed building at center, a pale green and red smaller building at right, and a group of pale green trees and shrubs. Scattered across the leaf are small figures in dark blue, green, brown, and red clothing, several horse-drawn carriages and horses in brown and black, and a few red-upholstered chairs near a small table at right. The fan ribs and guard are ivory-toned with dark decorative dots and lines, and the background around the fan is light gray.
