Composite miniature on leather, 18th century, India possibly Rajasthan. Height 26.0 cm, width 19.5 cm. Depicts a rider mounted on a horse composed of four female figures against a dark green background. Framed by a border decorated with multicolored flowers woven into a gold tendril. The rider wears typical Rajasthani male attire: white trousers, red tunic, and turban. The women wear narrow white and yellow trousers, short white and red blouses, and jewelry. Above the man is a mihrab arch typical of Indian architecture. The composite-image motif—human or animal figures inscribed within silhouettes—appears in Iranian and Indian art, including Mughal, Deccan, and Hindu traditions; similar motifs appear in depictions of Buraqa. Origin Central Asia and meaning remain hypothetical., A painted scene framed by a decorative floral border shows a group of figures on a dark green background. At the center a person wearing a red patterned garment and a headdress sits upright, holding a staff. Around this person are several other figures with brown skin tones and black hair, some wearing white garments and pearl-like jewelry, and two wearing yellow patterned cloth. One figure appears to be holding another, and a few figures are in dynamic, leaning poses with visible limbs and bare feet. To the left is a pale animal head with decorative harnessing and white and beige tones, positioned near the group. The border is green with floral motifs in red, blue, and white and has thin inner lines in gold and beige. The overall palette includes dark green, red, yellow, white, beige, black, and touches of gold.
