Fabric fragment, silk brocade brocaded grosgrain, 1st half of the 17th century, Italy. Red ground with a gold floral pattern of projections on curved leafy stems, featuring a large stylized tulip calyx. Motifs arranged in offset rows shifted by half a repeat, alternating lean left and right; between them a wavy twig with small leaves. Construction: yellow silk weft, red silk warp in a grosgrain weave; brocaded thread of gold plate braid on a yellow silk ground. Pattern repeat: 33 cm × 17 cm. Border width: 1 cm. Colors: yellow-brown, gold.
