Fragment of ochre-colored sheared velvet with a raised arabesque pattern bordered with embroidery. Embroidery with gold-braided metal thread. Pattern design based on popular motifs from model books; a stylized spirally twisted tendril in the form of the head of a deeply bloomed flower matches a popular letter pattern book by Johann Theodor de Bry. 16th century, Italy. Fabrics, chiseled velvet, plant motifs. Height 28 cm, width 30 cm. Creator, provenance unknown., A square fabric fragment with frayed edges displayed against a dark background, showing a raised floral and leafy pattern in a velvety texture; the fabric is primarily golden-beige with darker golden-brown areas forming stylized flowers, petals, and curling vines, and there are thin metallic threads outlining many of the motifs that appear silver-gray; the surface shows variations in sheen and pile, with crushed and smooth patches creating light and dark contrasts across the decorative design.
