David and Bathsheba tapestry, unknown workshop, Jan van Roome fl. 1498–1521 co-author, tapestries. Depicts David Bible and Bathsheba Bible; courtly scene, masterpiece. In the center is a fountain surrounded by arcades on slender columns. At the fountain is Bathsheba washing her hands. Next to her is the king's messenger, and around her are courtiers and musicians. Above on the right, on the porch in front of the palace, King David, surrounded by courtiers, observes the scene at the fountain. To the upper left is a group of young musicians. The colors of the fabric are limited and saturated, predominating: red, sapphire blue, green, and yellow. Without border. A similar depiction of Bathsheba at the fountain appears on tapestries in Madrid and Brussels; the Madrid tapestry is considered the prototype and belongs to a series of three tapestries telling the story of David and Bathsheba. 1500–1520, Brussels; tapestries; height 295 cm, width 330 cm., A richly detailed woven scene shows a group of people in ornate period clothing gathered around a central gilded structure with arches and a domed top. Several women wear long flowing gowns in deep blue, red, cream, and muted gold, many with intricate embroidery and decorative headpieces; a few men wear robes in blue and red with fur or jeweled trim. One seated figure in pale cream faces a standing figure in blue, while a kneeling youth in red and cream reaches toward the central structure. The background includes trees and a patterned architectural element, and the lower border features dense floral and leafy plant motifs in green, beige, and dark tones. Overall the palette includes blues, creams, reds, golds, greens, and muted earth tones, with metallic gold highlights woven into the central architectural feature.
