Velum of dark red satin embroidered around the edges with gold and silver thread in motifs of stylized flowers, trees, and palmettes. Edges trimmed with a short silver fringe. Lining of dark red silk moire. Early 18th century, Poland. Liturgical vestment, height 49 cm, width 49 cm., A square piece of fabric displayed flat against a pale background, the fabric is primarily deep red with a border of metallic gold fringe; the edges of the red area are decorated with an ornate gold embroidered pattern featuring flowing vine-like shapes, stylized leaves, and clusters of small round motifs, concentrated along the left, right, top, and bottom margins while the central area remains plain; the gold embroidery contrasts with the red ground and the fringe has a slightly tarnished metallic tone; the background around the fabric is light gray to off-white.
