Figural tapestry, Pastoral scene with a shepherd, a shepherdess, and a boy. In the center of the landscape, a man with a knot on a stick, accompanied by a boy and a woman with a switch in hand, are heading right toward a distant village. In front of them, closer to the foreground, stands a goat and a flock of sheep, while a donkey emerges from behind the woman. The scene is flanked by tall columns decorated with garlands of interwoven flowers. Above, between the columns, a similar garland hangs attached to the architrave; smaller flower garlands hang low on a pendant entwining a shepherd's hat, staff, and wineskin. Colors: light cream background, multicolored flower garlands predominate in shades of pink and green in whitened tones. Fabrics with pastoral love scenes were popular from the late 1770s and were modeled on drawings by Jean-Baptiste Marie Huet 1745–1811. Date: 1750–1780. Place of origin: France. Dimensions: height 220 cm, width 180 cm., A rectangular embroidered textile with an off-white background and a pale beige border, decorated with a garland of flowers in pink, red, green, and touches of blue draped near the top; a central floral and ribbon medallion in pink and green hangs from the garland; two vertical decorative columns on either side in warm golden and brown tones are entwined with floral clusters in pink, red, green, and blue; near the lower area a pastoral scene shows a few human figures dressed in garments with pink, red, beige, and brown hues standing among a group of grazing animals rendered in muted browns, greys, and beige, with grassy ground in shades of green and small floral accents in pink and blue; overall the piece displays embroidery texture and areas of wear on a light neutral ground.
