Tapestry, 16th century late 16th century, Flanders. Preserved fragment of fabric, height 164 cm, width 365 cm. Millefleurs tapestry: entire surface densely strewn with motifs of small flowering plants on a black background; ornament colors red, green, dark navy blue, and sand. Slightly above the horizontal axis are two medallions, each framed by a thick wreath of fruit, flowers, scrollwork motifs, and a mascaron. One medallion depicts a rural landscape with architecture and an emblem with a jug at the top; the other shows a forest landscape with a moose and a doe in the foreground and a suspended emblem at the top. The upper border preserved only in the upper part consists of a thick twig of flowers and fruit., A large rectangular woven textile with a dense all-over floral field in shades of green, brown, red, blue, and cream, featuring two round medallions set into the floral background; each medallion is bordered by a band of stylized flowers and foliage in colors including cream, blue, yellow, red, and green, and contains a central scene with architectural and natural elements rendered in muted blues, greens, creams, and tan; a narrow decorative border runs along the top with a repeating floral and fruit motif in blue, cream, yellow, red, and green; the overall palette is earthy and muted with visible texture and areas of wear.
