Figural tapestry by Franz Geubels 1535–1590, woven in Brussels, Flanders, 2nd half of the 16th century. Tapestry depicts figures of a woman and a man facing each other, fighting soldiers in the foreground and background, and a mountain landscape; figures in military costume, decorative fabrics, and interior furnishings. No border. Colors: green, red, sapphire blue, sand, and yellow. Materials: fabrics; height 218 cm, width 358 cm., A densely detailed woven scene shows a large battle with many armored figures and horses across a grassy landscape, rendered in muted yellows, blues, greens, reds, and tans. In the foreground, several soldiers wearing helmets and breastplates clash with spears and swords, some figures crouched or fallen, and a few horses rearing. The midground contains a crowded mass of combatants extending into the distance, with more riders, banners, and shields. Background elements include rolling hills, a cluster of trees, a body of water, and architectural structures like towers and buildings set among orchards and terraces, all woven in similar palette tones. The entire composition is bordered by a plain blue-green edge.
