Church napkin made of white batiste density: 31 warp and weft threads per 1 cm, embroidered with gold thread and black silk with small motifs of carnation flowers and cypress, edged with serrations. Chain stitch embroidery, both with silk and gold thread, pierced, single-sided. The embroidery could have been executed on a hoop with a special needle; in that case it would be dated to the 2nd half of the 14th century. Attributed dates: 16th/17th century; also cited 17th century E. Soszko., Function: church paraments/Church napkin. Subject: flowers, leaves, plant ornaments, sacred art. Technique/materials: fabrics, batiste, gold thread, black silk. Place of origin: Poland. Dimensions: height 84.5 cm, width 90 cm., A square fabric laid flat with a delicate triangular scalloped border in a metallic gold color, the main body of the cloth is a pale cream or ivory tone with a subtle sheen and a visible central fold. Scattered across the surface are a few small embroidered floral motifs in muted gold and darker brownish-gray threads, some areas showing slightly frayed or worn patches and small interruptions in the weave. The background around the cloth is a very light gray-lavender color.
