Cabinet, late 17th century, Northern Germany, or Poland, cuboid storage piece with a top drawer and double doors below, height 70.1 cm, width 89.2 cm, depth 55.9 cm. Richly decorated with openwork engraved fittings featuring grotesque motifs, fantastic animals and figures, male figures, Hermes, plant tendrils and wickerwork ornament. Door leaves veneered inside with rosewood and ebony in geometric arrangements divided by inlaid bone veins, with figures in engraved bone signed Hippocrates on the left and Hermes on the right. Behind the doors are twelve compartments. Drawer and door locks fitted with engraved steel plates; the drawer lock blocks the left door leaf. Steel hinges., A rectangular wooden chest with visible metal reinforcements and corner brackets, showing a worn and weathered surface; the wood appears brown with variations in tone and grain, the metal fittings are dark gray to black with areas of lighter gray wear, and the top shows rough, decayed dark gray material; the background is a pale neutral color.
