Cabinet, late 17th century, Northern Germany, or Poland, cabinet with a drawer at the top and double doors below, richly decorated with openwork engraved fittings with grotesque motifs. Door leaves veneered on the inside with rosewood and ebony in geometric arrangements, divided by inlaid bone veining, with figures in engraved bone signed Hippocrates on the left and Hermes on the right. Behind the doors are twelve compartments. Drawer and door locks fitted with engraved steel plates; the drawer lock blocks the left door leaf. Steel hinges. Motifs include grotesques, fantastic animals and figures, male figures, Hermes, plant tendrils, wickerwork ornament. Height 70.1 cm, width 89.2 cm, depth 55.9 cm., A wooden chest with a rectangular front face, showing a warm brown wood grain and darker brown to black metal hardware, including ornate decorative metal straps and corner plates with scalloped edges, an intricate central metal escutcheon with a looping handle, and additional metalwork along the top edge; the metal appears aged and dark, and the chest sits against a plain pale background with visible shadows.
