Chest, creator unknown, provenance unknown. Dowry chest with convex lid and side walls slightly tapering toward the bottom; richly decorated with openwork and repoussé fittings featuring plant motifs, rocaille and stylized acanthus elements, rococo and baroque stylistic features, crowns, and monograms. On the front of the lid, on the axis, an openwork plate with a rococo cartouche containing the date and initials: 17 DEG 73. Two decoratively designed strap hinges on the sides of the lid extend into the front-wall decoration, where fittings form a horizontal composition of five asymmetrical cartouches diminishing toward the sides. Side edges of the lid are edged with openwork bands; analogous applications in the body corners. Side walls feature large openwork plates. Lid boards joined with tongue-and-groove joints. 2nd half of the 18th century c. 1773, Central Europe. Piece of furniture, storage unit. Dimensions: height 69.7 cm, width 129.4 cm, depth 63.5 cm., A wooden chest with a domed lid sits against a plain light gray background; the chest is dark brown with visible wood grain and darker brown metal straps and decorative metal fittings, including an ornate metal plate on the front with a scrolling floral motif and decorative corner plates, and the lid shows a row of rounded metal studs along its edge and rectangular metal bands across its top.
