Key, Szewczykowski, Roman 1849–1901 — Key for a ratchet lock with a feather at the end of the shaft forming an outline of a cross on a horizontal beam. The shaft has profiles and an oval handle. This type of lock was already in use in the Roman period. The keyhole is in the shape of an inverted T; opening is achieved by vertical movement of the key, not rotation. In France it is called à la cordelière or à la capucine due to depictions of such a key hanging at the end of a cord used to tie Capuchin habits; this type of lock was often used in monastery cell doors. The bolt mechanism is similar to locks used in rural buildings into the 20th century, functioning as a handle lock opened by a lever passing through the door and ending on the other side with a flat plate pressed with the thumb. 18th century; locksmith.
