Pocket watch with key, Norton, Eardley fl. 1770–1792 born 1728, died 1792. Case made in Germany, 3rd quarter of the 18th century; movement by Eardley Norton, London. Pocket repeater in two silver cases: smooth outer case; inner case with framed glazed lid and a mechanism cover engraved with an openwork floral twig, winding hole, and bell. White-enameled dial with black Roman hour numerals, minute scale marked with dashes, calendar with Arabic numerals, three steel hands hour and minute in openwork weave, third straight for day of month, and small seconds subdial with Arabic numerals. Dial signed “EARDLEY NORTON / LONDON.” Movement: gilded brass frame with circular plates connected by pillars, spring-driven with spindle escapement; lower plate with openwork crown richly decorated with acanthus tendrils and engraved acanthus volutes; cut-out reserve engraved “Eardley / Norton London.” Preserved winding key on a chain. Timepiece; height 8 cm, width 6.2 cm, dial diameter 5.3 cm., A metallic pocket watch with an open hinged cover lies against a pale background, showing a white circular face with dark thin hands and a smaller inset dial; the watch case and cover are silver-colored with a slightly aged patina, and a short brass-colored chain with a small key-like attachment is connected to the watch.
