Double snuffbox, enameller LZ France?, fl. ca. 1700. Double-sided snuffbox, tall, narrowed halfway up; slightly bulging lids framed by silver with profiled fittings. White-enameled, decorated with colourful scenes from the story of Samson against grissaille-painted landscape backgrounds. Sides: two scenes—Samson going to the Philistine city of Timna shown the way by three women, and Samson fighting a lion. Lids: Samson carrying the city gate to the top of the mountain opposite Hebron, and Samson taking honey from the lion's mouth. Reverses of the lids: two landscapes with architecture painted in grissaille and colourful flowers painted in the bottoms. Enamelling; early 18th century, France . Smoking accessory. Height 7 cm, width 7.7 cm, depth 4.7 cm., A small curved container with a hinged lid made of silvery metal and white porcelain, decorated with painted figures and a landscape; the porcelain shows a group of three people in flowing garments in purple, yellow, pink, blue, and green, one holding a long yellow staff and wearing blue footwear, standing by faint grey tree and rock sketches; the metal rim and base are reflective silver, and the background surface is a neutral light grey.
