Prize cup by Mappin & Webb Ltd goldsmith, silversmith, dealer; fl. 1859-. Scrap - purchase, occasional inscriptions; sports award for horse racing cross-country steeplechase. Cup on a circular, arched, profiled base and short shaft; semi-ovoid body, flattened at the bottom; slightly flared upper edge bordered with a half-cylinder; two volute handles. Engraved inscription: BURSTON POINT TO POINT MEETING / 22nd APRIL 1911 / OPEN STEEP LECHASE / WON BY / MR H. DETERDING'S / 'NIGGER'. Dated 1910/1911. England, London. Vessel; height 16.5 cm, width 23.5 cm, depth 14.5 cm, weight 500 g., A polished silver trophy cup with a rounded rim and a flared pedestal base sits against a light gray background; it has ornate, curled handles on either side with decorative scrollwork and a smooth, reflective surface that shows subtle scratches and reflections, and the interior appears slightly darker and more golden-toned compared with the exterior; overall colors visible are silver, light gray, and a hint of warm metallic gold inside.
