Fragrance container vinaigrette. Maker: Thomas Shaw fl. 1822–ca. 1840; 1782–1845, goldsmith. Scrap - purchase, purchase provenance. Vinaigrette in the form of a bag with an envelope closure and a protruding tongue, decorated on the front with dot-engraved flowers and leaves. Hinged lid opens to reveal an openwork insert decorated with plant scrolls. Materials/technique: engraving, openwork. Date: 1834/1835. Place: Birmingham, England, Great Britain. Function: toilet accessory. Dimensions: height 2.1 cm, width 1.5 cm, depth 1 cm; weight 10 g., A small rectangular metal box with its lid open, showing an inner surface with worn and scratched areas; the interior has a mix of silver and warm gold tones with patches of darker tarnished spots, and the exterior edges appear silver with engraved patterns on the lid. The hinge and inner rim show metallic wear, and the inner side of the lid displays horizontal scratch marks and a golden wash; the right side panel of the box is open and reveals a dotted texture with a gold-colored interior. The overall image background is a pale light gray, and the box shows signs of aging with varied shades of silver, gold, gray, and darkened brownish tarnish.
