Fragrance container vinaigrette, maker Thomas Shaw fl. 1822–ca. 1840; 1782–1845, goldsmith; scrap-purchase provenance. Vinaigrette in the form of a bag with an envelope closure and a protruding tongue, decorated on the front with dot-engraved flowers and leaves. Hinged lid opening to an interior with an openwork insert decorated with plant scrolls. Dated 1834/1835. England, Birmingham. Toilet accessory. Materials/technique: engraving, openwork. Dimensions: height 2.1 cm, width 1.5 cm, depth 1 cm; weight 10 g., A small open metal box with a hinged lid shown from an angle, the interior of the lid displaying scratches and a worn golden surface, the box interior featuring a decorative filigree insert with ornate cutouts and touches of gold, the exterior of the box appearing silver with engraved patterns and a slightly tarnished, aged finish; the overall colors visible are silver, gold, and pale gray, set against a light gray background.
