Fragrance container vinaigrette, by Thomas Shaw fl. 1822–ca. 1840; 1782–1845. Silver vinaigrette in the form of a bag with an envelope closure and a protruding tongue, decorated on the front with dot-engraved flowers and leaves. Hinged lid opens to reveal an openwork insert decorated with plant scrolls. Dated 1834/1835. Birmingham, England. Toilet accessory. Dimensions: height 2.1 cm, width 1.5 cm, depth 1 cm; weight 10 g., A small rectangular metal box with rounded edges sits angled on a light background, showing a hinged top and a clasp on one side; the surface is a dull silver color with visible scratches and a pattern of incised decorative marks including floral motifs and dotted border lines; there is a small metal hinge and a thin metal strip along one side, and the box casts a faint shadow on the pale surface.
