Wine cooler by Boulton & Plate Co. Birmingham; goldsmith and plater firm; fl. 1768–1834. Maker's role: author. Materials and style: classicism, Georgian. Decoration and iconography: vine ornament, acanthus leaf ornament, Satyr heads, cymatium, jockey on horse and horse racing scenes, dedications. Description: classicist on a circular foot decorated with a half-cylinder of laurel and acanthus leaves overlapping a short stem; body enclosed below with large acanthus leaves, above decorated with vines in a diagonal rhombic braid. Plaque on the front with racers and riders; a plaque on the back with a secondary inscription in Cyrillic script is attached the original inscription, probably referring to a prize in horse races, has been erased. Under the upper edge a decorative strip of vines; the rim is edged with a stylized kimation; on the sides massive ears mounted in satyr masks. Date: 1826/1827. Place of manufacture: Birmingham, England, Great Britain. Object type: vessel wine cooler. Dimensions: height 30 cm; width 27 cm; depth 24.5 cm; weight 3725 g., A round shallow bowl viewed from above with a reflective golden interior showing concentric circular rings and subtle surface marks, surrounded by a decorative rim featuring a repeating beaded pattern and rounded raised ornaments; visible colors include gold, pale metallic tones, a few white highlights on the rim, and a neutral light gray background.
