Wine cooler by Boulton & Plate Co. Birmingham; goldsmith and plater firm; fl. 1768–1834. Silver vessel, 1826/1827. Classicism, Georgian style. Circular foot decorated with a half-cylinder of laurel and acanthus leaves overlapping a short stem; body enclosed below with large acanthus leaves, above decorated with diagonal vine in a rhombic braid. Plaque on the front with racers jockey on horse; horse racing; a secondary plaque on the back bears an inscription in Cyrillic script the original inscription, probably referring to a prize in horse races, has been erased. Decorative strip of vines under the upper edge; rim edged with a stylized cymatium/kimation; massive handles mounted in satyr masks. Decorations include vine ornament, acanthus leaf, satyr heads, and classicist motifs. Height 30 cm; width 27 cm; depth 24.5 cm; weight 3725 g., A decorative ornate urn with a metallic golden color overall, featuring a wide flared rim with a repeating scalloped edge and carved teardrop motifs, a band of sculpted vine leaves and grape clusters around the upper body in darker and lighter golden tones, and a central section with sculpted handles resembling wrapped ribbons and a group of three-dimensional mask-like faces surrounded by foliage and berries; the lower body shows acanthus leaf carvings leading to a beaded collar above a pedestal with raised swirling leaf patterns and a textured circular base, all in varying shades of gold and subtle shadows against a neutral pale gray background.
