Leg tray by Robert Harper fl. 1853–1869 and Harper & Son London; goldsmith's firm; fl. 1869–1889. Circular patera supported on three volute legs terminating in vine leaves at the base. The mirror features a blind reserve richly decorated with engraved Neo-Rococo ornament in the form of rocailles, rooster combs, acanthus volutes, and floral sprigs. The slightly raised, openwork collar has relief decoration of vine leaves and grapes, with four Dionysus masks at the feet, and high-relief insects butterflies, moths, midges, snails, and a caterpillar. The collar edge is profiled half-cylinder decorated with shells and a rooster comb. Motifs: insects, vines, snails, caterpillars, head of Dionysus; rocaille, volutes, acanthus leaf ornament. Date: 1860/1861. Place: London, England. Medium/function: vessel leg tray. Dimensions: height 3.9 cm; diameter 32.5 cm; weight 895 g., A round decorative metal tray with an ornate raised rim featuring a repeating floral and scroll motif in metallic silver tones, a central engraved ornamental cartouche with intricate scrollwork and foliage details in similar silver, and a few small areas of darker tarnish or shadow on the tray surface; the background is a plain light gray to white.
