Single-candle candlestick by John Schofield fl. 1776–1796. Classicism/Georgian, George III style. Silver candlestick supported on a circular profiled stepped foot, decorated with a knurled band of stylised acanthus twig with flowers on a seeded background; faceted stem enclosed at the bottom by lanceolate leaves, widening towards the top and terminating in a ring decorated with knurled oak leaves; vase sleeve with lanceolate leaves at the bottom, faceted above with a slightly rolled-up edge. Dated 1789/1790, London, England. Function: lighting. Height 29.8 cm; width 13.8 cm; weight approx. 680 g., A silver-colored metal candlestick stands upright against a plain light gray background; it has a flared cup at the top with a darker interior, a decorative midsection with leaf-like vertical ridges and a rounded collar with embossed leaf motifs, a tapered fluted stem with a narrower carved section repeating the leaf motif, and a broad circular base with concentric ridges and an embossed decorative band around its edge. The visible colors are silver, light gray, and a darker gray inside the top cup.
