Single-candle candlestick, William Cafe fl. 1757–ca. 1802, goldsmith; rococo style, Georgian/George II influence; 1763–1764, London, England. Silver scrap-purchase technique. Rococo on a raised domed foot with hexagonal rim, decorated with flower heads at the corners, passing into a baluster shaft and terminating in a vase-shaped socket with a disc-shaped drip pan. Decorated with rocailles, plant tendrils, flowers, cartouches, shells and acanthus leaves; entire decoration slightly spirally twisted. Function: lighting. Height 29 cm; diameter 16.9 cm; weight 717 g., A single ornate candlestick stands against a light gray background, rendered in a silvery metallic tone. The piece has a flared, scalloped top with flowing carved edges, a slender central column with bulbous and contoured sections, and decorative floral and foliate reliefs along the shaft. The base is wide and irregularly shaped with raised floral motifs and curved, embossed patterns. The visible colors are silver and subtle variations of gray.
