Single-candle candlestick by William Cafe fl. 1757–ca.1802, goldsmith. Rococo/Georgian George II style, 1763–1764, London, England, Great Britain. Raised domed foot with hexagonal rim decorated with flower heads at the corners, passing into a baluster shaft and terminating in a vase-shaped socket with a disc-shaped drippan. Decorated in rocaille motifs—plant tendrils, flowers, cartouches, shells, acanthus leaves—in slight spiral twist. Materials/technique: silver goldsmith work. Function: lighting. Height 29 cm; diameter 16.9 cm; weight 695 g., A tall ornate metallic candlestick stands upright against a pale gray background, showing a polished silver surface with decorative reliefs. The top has a shallow scalloped dish with floral and scroll motifs, leading to a slender stem that features raised acanthus-like leaves and rounded fluted sections. The midsection bulges into a heart-shaped knop decorated with sculpted roses and other floral forms, then tapers into a column with carved ridges and curving embellishments. The base flares outward into a wide, irregularly shaped plinth adorned with abundant floral garlands, roses, leaves, and flowing scrollwork, all in the same silver tone. The visible colors are silver and shades of gray from highlights and soft shadows.
