Oval platter by Benjamin & James Smith fl. 1809–1812, maker's mark; Georgian/George III style; silver; oval with smooth mirror and multi-leafed ribbed collar edged with a godron band and four shells on the axes, enclosed within acanthus leaves; engraved coats of arms on the shorter axis of the collar; underside of the collar engraved monogram GvR, dated 1811/1812; engraved shells, godron ornaments, acanthus leaves; vessel; height 3 cm, width 47 cm, depth 37.5 cm, weight 2420 g., A large ornate oval metal tray with a polished surface, showing a few fine scratches and scuffs, surrounded by an intricately molded rim with a scalloped edge and decorative shell- and scroll-like motifs at intervals; the tray appears reflective and metallic silver in color, with darker silver shadows in the recessed areas and along the inner rim, and lighter silver highlights on the raised decorative elements.
