Shepherd's Scene with a Shepherd Milking a Goat, Philipp Peter Roos 1657–1706. The overall tones are browns and dark blues. The surface is fully composed, the focal point is a cow standing at the back and a group of five animals, three sheep and two goats, filling the right side of the scene. On the right, a seated shepherd in a sheepskin coat and hat milks a goat into a wooden bucket. Next to the goat is a small white kid. At the front a dog laps water from a shallow pond. On the right in the background, city buildings are visible on a hill; the dark sky is covered with puffy clouds. In the upper corner is the Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli. Several identical faces of sheep and rams appear. Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa di Tivoli born August 30, 1657 in Sankt Goar; died January 17, 1706 in Rome — German landscape painter. Possibly related works: NB 4918, NB 4920, and NB 4921. 18th century, Italy; overdoor; height 91.0 cm, width 127.0 cm., A dark painting shows a group of animals with a central doglike animal bending down to drink from a small reflective area, its fur rendered in white and off-white tones with darker brown and black shading on its head and legs; surrounding areas are deep brown and black with hints of muted tan fur from other animals at the top and right edges; the lower edge features a sculpted ornate frame in creamy white with soft shadows and a small visible crack.
