Shepherd's Scene with a Shepherd Milking a Goat, Roos, Philipp Peter 1657–1706. The overall tones are browns and dark blues. The surface is fully composed, the focal point is a cow at the back and a group of five animals three sheep and two goats filling the right side. On the right, a seated shepherd in a sheepskin coat and hat milks a goat into a wooden bucket. Next to the goat is a small white kid. At the front a dog laps water from a shallow pond. On the right background, city buildings sit on a hill. The dark sky is covered with puffy clouds. In the upper corner is the Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli. The painting features several identical faces of sheep and rams. Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa di Tivoli born August 30, 1657 in Sankt Goar; died January 17, 1706 in Rome — German landscape painter. Possibly related works NB 4918, NB 4920, and NB 4921 may also be by this painter. 18th century, Italy; overdoor; height 91.0 cm, width 127.0 cm., A dark painting framed by an ornate pale frame shows a group of animals and a seated man. A large brown cow stands near the center with curved horns and a dark face, surrounded by several sheep and goats with woolly coats in shades of cream, beige, and white, and a few animals with darker brown or black fur. A light-colored goat drinks from a shallow pool near the bottom while another light goat stands nearby, and a darker goat stands to the left with long curved horns. The seated man wears a dark brown hat and a textured brown garment and faces slightly to the right, his hands resting near a nearby animal. The background has a cloudy sky in muted blues and grays and a distant low landscape with a hint of structures on a hill. Overall the palette is dominated by deep browns, creams, whites, muted blues, and grays.
